Marcel Grech Mallia recounts Epic Malta’s journey in securing a 15-year Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) with GÉANT.
As Chief Commercial Officer for Epic Malta, Marcel Grech Mallia plays a pivotal role in driving innovation and growth strategies, while bridging the gaps between sales, key customer relationships, marketing, and operations. Mr Grech Mallia led the effort resulting in Epic being selected by GÉANT, for premium international connectivity in connecting Malta to Milan with a 100Gbps wavelength circuit. Here he sheds light on the significance of this award and how it reinforces Epic’s commitment to providing exceptional B2B services and investing in robust infrastructure.
Epic Malta’s success in securing a 15-year Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) with GÉANT for this important route is no coincidence, and a prestigious achievement in the telecommunications industry, signifying Epic’s strong infrastructure and reliable connectivity solutions. GÉANT’s advanced pan-European network interconnects Europe’s National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) which in turn, connect research and education institutions for shared projects and real-time collaboration among researchers, educators, and students across Europe and beyond. With over 50 million users relying on this combined infrastructure, Epic’s selection reinforces the resilience and quality of its infrastructure. The eligibility process for the partnership was rigorous, with a focus on connecting the University of Malta to GÉANT’s pan-European network via Milan. This is where Epic’s robust network infrastructure was of paramount importance, making it the most attractive option factoring both the robustness of the solution and the commercial offer delivered.
The contract with GÉANT is a long-term endeavour. Mr Grech Mallia highlights that this demonstrates Epic’s long-term vision and robustness in infrastructure which has the capacity to handle such a complex set up, ensuring seamless connectivity and uninterrupted services for customers.
In addition to its infrastructure, Epic’s reputation “as a reliable B2B service provider also contributes to the significance of the partnership.” Here Mr Grech Mallia stresses the resilience and agility of Epic’s solutions, enabling them to cater to the specific needs of each B2B customer.
“Epic Malta’s commitment to delivering tailored solutions, and its ability to adapt to ever-changing requirements, positions them as a trusted partner in the telecommunications industry, excelling in providing mission-critical services to the public and commercial sectors,” he says.
Epic is heavily investing in the local market with a strong focus on fixed services for B2B, providing amongst others local and international connectivity, fixed telephony, and data centre services.
These services require the highest level of reliability and security, in which Epic has extensive experience.
As part of Monaco Telecom’s family, the company also has an established presence in the international arena and leverages global best practices. Operating as an agile telecoms company, Epic prides itself in tailoring solutions to meet the unique requirements of each B2B customer.
Mr Grech Mallia concludes by reiterating that the contract with GÉANT goes beyond commercial interests for Epic. It impacts every aspect of Epic’s day-to-day operations, including the growth and well-being of the medical, educational, and other sectors they serve. The multi-year commitment to GÉANT aligns with Epic’s long-term vision and further solidifies their robustness in the industry.
Epic’s significant investments in its fixed infrastructure, mobile networks, and state-of-the-art technology also support Malta’s future-ready digital strategy. This further consolidates Epic’s leading position, and a reference point for industries ready to embrace emerging technologies, providing exceptional connectivity solutions.
“Epic continues to be the most trusted provider in the telecommunications industry, empowering businesses to thrive in the ever-evolving digital age.”
